Recipe: Aromatic Comforting Herbal Tea for Warmth and Immune Strength

As the first rains of the season hit, I realized that I needed an immune booster. So I began taking echinacea, ginger, and burdock teas regularly. But then I saw my fenugreek jar untouched and thought, why not? Five minutes in, and the aroma transported me far away from here like the trip I could not take last summer. The next time I added some fennel seeds and then some cinnamon. Turns out, happiness in a wet, frigid morning does have a smell. This blend will get you through the winter. It will keep you warm, boost your immune system, aid with digestion, and as if that wasn’t enough, it will also remove waste from your lymphatic system and nurture your precious body. What else can you ask for from a little cup of tea?

The Ingredients

Ginger Root

Ginger is a must-have. If I was going to keep just one herb in stock, that would be ginger. Well known for its digestive powers, ginger also stimulates circulation which will keep your hands and feet warmer this winter. In addition, its antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, and expectorant actions will help you beat the cold and flu.

Fennel Seeds

Like ginger, fennel seeds are anti-microbial, anti-inflammatory, and expectorant. They are valued for their aroma and sweet flavor. You will often find a bowl of fennel seeds by the door at Indian restaurants as they have proven effective in keeping digestive symptoms at bay.

Burdock Root

Burdock can help clear up build-up of toxins and digestive sluggishness which makes it particularly useful during the approaching overindulging season.

Echinacea Root

Echinacea is a potent immunostimulant and antibiotic. It is used for colds, the flu, and sinus, throat, and lung infection.

Fenugreek Seeds

Fenugreek is a very warming spice commonly used in Indian, North African, and Middle Eastern cuisine. It adds a sweet, nutty flavor to this blend.

Cinnamon Bark

Well known for its culinary uses, cinnamon not only can enhance the flavor of your favorite seasonal sweets but can also aid in their digestion. My advice, keep a separate stash just in case.

The Method

For this recipe, we will use the decoction method. This method is typically used when extracting the properties of hard roots, dried berries, barks, and seeds. Except for cinnamon, the rest of the ingredients in the blend require more time and heat. Place the herbs in a pan. Bring water to a boil over medium heat and lower the heat. Simmer for 20 minutes. Cinnamon might be added for 3-5 minutes at the end of simmering or after turning the heat off.
